As tremulous as any Gothic heroine, Mariana goes toe-to-toe with assorted scornful and seductive male authority figures while trying to get to the truth. There are assignations in graveyards and notorious parties and scads of classical references. The students-the eponymous maidens-cluster around a Byronic male classics professor, and our heroine, Mariana, worries that her beloved niece might also have come under his spell.
